5 Nonsurgical Ways to Smoothen Your Fine Lines

5 Nonsurgical Ways to Smoothen Your Fine Lines

Visible fine lines and wrinkles on your face are part of aging, and they’re due to many factors. However, that doesn’t mean you have to live with them.

Michael Ragen, MD, FACS, and the cosmetics team at Ventura Eye Institute in Camarillo, California, can provide effective injections of collagen fillers and Botox® to freshen up your appearance.

The structure of your facial skin

Two primary proteins, elastin and collagen, support your skin by forming a fiber framework for the skin’s surface. When this structure is robust, skin lies taught across it, without sagging, dimples, or creases.

As we age, these proteins deteriorate, resulting in volume loss. These changes mean you’ll start developing static and dynamic wrinkles.

As the structure holding the surface of your skin in place slowly degrades, your skin starts to sag.

You’ll see droopiness under your eyes, lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (marionette lines), and light creases across your cheeks as gravity inexorably works to drag everything down. These static wrinkles keep getting more pronounced as time goes by.

In addition to wrinkles caused by skin losing volume and starting to sag, you can end up with fine lines that deepen over time due to your normal facial expressions.

Known as dynamic wrinkles, they develop around your eyes (crow’s feet), across your forehead, and between your eyebrows. These lines also get harsher and deeper as the years march on.

5 ways to smooth out fine lines without cosmetic surgery

There are many things you can do to lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles without resorting to surgery.

1. Stop smoking

Smoking prematurely ages your skin. Kicking the cigarette habit can prolong the beauty of your skin and prevent deep lines and wrinkles from forming as quickly.

2. Use sunscreen

Another major culprit when it comes to early aging of the skin is sun damage. This kind of damage, known as photoaging, comes from sun exposure.

3. Maintain a skin care routine

Keep your skin clean and moisturized to improve laxity and suppleness. This can also lessen the visibility of lines.

4. Collagen fillers

Collagen injections can help fill in fine lines and static wrinkles, giving your skin a smoother, plumper appearance.

5. Botox

Botox injections work on dynamic wrinkles, by paralyzing the tiny muscles that pull the skin into creases. It’s very mild and won’t make the rest of your face stiff or expressionless.
