Am I a good candidate for LASIK?

LASIK surgery is intended for patients whose eyes have finished developing. You may be a good candidate if:

  • You are in generally good health
  • Your cornea is adequately thick
  • Your prescription is stable

Your provider will help you determine if you are a candidate for LASIK surgery and discuss your goals and your budget.

What is bladeless LASIK?

Many patients stray away from LASIK surgery because having a sharp object near their eye sounds too risky. However, a blade doesn’t need to come near your eye. Bladeless LASIK, or all-laser LASIK, uses two types of lasers to perform the procedure.

The first procedure uses a femtosecond laser to cut a thin flap into your cornea, the clear frontmost layer of your eye. The second procedure uses an excimer laser to reshape the corneal tissue underneath to correct your eyesight. Then, the flap is placed back onto your eye.

Will I need adjustments after LASIK treatment?

With modern LASIK procedures, most patients only need one treatment. About 1-2 percent of patients need a touch-up the first year, and then about 1% of patients need touch-ups yearly after that. So after 10 years, about 10 percent of patients will need touch-ups to maintain their excellent vision.

What are the risks of LASIK surgery?

Like any corrective eye surgery, LASIK comes with possible risks. These risks include:

  • Temporary pain or discomfort
  • Light sensitivity
  • Double vision
  • Keratectasia (bulging of the eye’s surface)
  • Dry eyes
  • Under- or over-correction
  • Infection

Your provider will discuss any risks involved and answer any questions you have during your consultation.

If you’re seeking a permanent solution to your poor eyesight, call or schedule a consultation online at Ventura Eye Institute to determine if LASIK surgery is right for you.
